I told Tony that he should journal after each rotation so he can look back at all the pro's and cons. I don't know if he'll actually do it, but I thought I'd write down some of my thoughts....
after all, one of these will be the career path he chooses!
Internal Medicine:
First half was SO GOOD. Maybe not the hours, they kinda sucked, but this type of medicine is what he's been looking forward to (he's only had psych and derm). It's the quick thinking, deductive reasoning, diagnosing, puzzle solving, and bond with patients that makes this so good. I could tell that every day he was interested, challenged, genuinely concerned and cared for his patients.
Second half wasn't so good. I'm sure this has to do with the different setting: attendings, hospital, and patients. I think time in the hospital full-time starting getting a little wearing. Also, chronic diseases (COPD, diabetes, obesity) over and over again seemed to get a little tiresome and/or frustrating. When you're working in the hospital full-time, you end up seeing people that won't be living very long (not always an immediate terminal prognosis, but not a great life expectancy), and, sadly, sometimes patients die in the hospital; that can get hard and disappointing.
Do I think this will be his career?
Ehhh, probably not, but could be... not really sure. It'd be a great choice if he wanted to specialize, but I don't see him working in a hospital environment 24/7. (Although I do enjoy seeing my husband wear scrubs sometimes... but the dress shirts and ties are good too. ;)) Overall, I don't see this type of work being something that he'd want to do for a career. Was it a good experience? Yes. Did he enjoy all the learning? Absolutely. Did this rotation show me that my husband is going to make one hell of an awesome, kind-hearted, smart, and great doctor? Without a doubt! We're excited to see what the next rotation of Family Medicine has to offer!
