It's a new year and a new chapter in medical school for Tony-- ROTATIONS!
I told Tony that he should journal after each rotation so he can look back at all the pro's and cons. I don't know if he'll actually do it, but I thought I'd write down some of my thoughts....
after all, one of these will be the career path he chooses!
Psychiatry:
Great hours!! I could totally get used to this sort of schedule, especially considering the pay potential.
The work load seems to be pretty light, even the on-call days did not seem too intense. However, this side of medicine can be "deep" and I could see how it could, especially over time, wear on a doctor who practices in this field. I love how he came home excited to talk about his days. There is such a wide variety of mental illnesses, so I think seeing different things every day helped keep this rotation interesting and keep him on his toes. I know he really liked having the patient interactions and conversations, but a couple of times he mentioned missing the part of medicine that entails physical exams and "problem solving" type diagnosis.
Do I think this will be his career?
Maybe, but doubtful. I'm surprised he liked it as much as he did (because he didn't think he'd like it at all)... but I don't think this will be THE one.
